The Cobalt Club

The Shadow fan club.

... on the Sam Rami "Shadow" movie? I know that Rami's been a fan for years and I really HOPE this project sees the light of day. There was a lot to like about the '95 Shadow (Not the least of which was Alec Baldwin and Tim Curry), but the movie got next to no studio support.

So what do we think? Yea or Nea?

Sam Rami has done a lot of good stuff, Bruce Campbell would be a natural to appear in the film if Sam Rami is producing it.

Bruce Campbell would make an excellent Harry.

I've only seen one Sam Raimi movie that didn't make me very happy, and that one was an out of character film for Sam, a baseball weeper with Kevin Costner and Kelly Preston, "...Heart...Game," or something like that. Very Boring. When Sam deals with his passions, he's amazing. I direct you to The first Darkman, The Gift, or A Simple Plan if you're only familiar with the Spidey or Evil Dead films. This news makes me VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY HAPPY.

I am guessing it will be a lot closer to the "pulp" incarnation. Raimi is a long-time Shadow fan, and I can't see him tackling this project without trying to be as faithful to Walter Gibson's influence as possible.

So who would I like to see in the role of the Shadow? At the moment I am leaning toward Anthony Howell, who plays Sergeant Paul Milner on Foyle's War:

Anthony Howell

I'm sure a few people here didn't like the Baldwin version, but I kinda wish that it had become the franchise that they had hoped for because I did like the movie. I thought it was a good combination of the pulp and the radio show. However, I digress, I do think Sam Raimi has the potential to do justice to the character as well, but he can get a little too weird with it, he needs to find a good balance on this one. As to who could be the lead, I don't have anyone in mind for that.

We all know that "Darkman" was Raimi's response to not being able to do his own Shadow movie. And it was GREAT! I think it would be an excellent film if it gets made. That is one of those dream internet rumor movies that have been floating around for years. Well, I say keep hope alive! I did really enjoy the '95 film, I thought it looked great. I do think that someone who has a love for the material could do a much better job with it though. Casting could be tricky, where do you put Bruce Campbell?

I agree with Tommi above that Bruce Campbell would be the best and most obvious choice for the Shadow's top surrogate, the perpetually down-and-out Harry Vincent. I think Joe Pantoleone, known as "Joey Pantz" from "Momento," "The Matrix," and "The Sopranos," would make a wonderful Burbank.

Bruce Campbell as Harry? I could see it if Campbell was ten or fifteen years younger (Army of Darkness era), but these days he is a little past that role... in my opinion. Although there might be a way to work him in, if folks aren't determined that he has to be Harry Vincent.

Campbell might work better as Cliff Marshland. He may not be quite as built or burly looking as Cliff is described, but I think he could pull it off since the character is older.

I know it seems odd, but what about Willem Dafoe as the Shadow? A bit of an odd choice, but his face really can switch from terrifying to suave in a split second (Goblin/Osborn much?).

I'd like to personally see Jericho make an appearance. I love the character for many reasons, but it's also nice to show a character that's just as strong as the Shadow himself.

Why are you guys talking about who would make a good actor for the Shadow when we don't know at all if there would be a new movie? The most recent update about it on the internet was posted I think it was late or early last year. There hasn't been anything else anywhere about the production of the film. Either way, Rami will make an awesome movie, he did an extremely good job with all three Dark Man movies. But I am most suspicious of the letter that I believe David got back from Sam, that said he had no current plans to create the film.
